Fighting Sleep Apnoea with A Somnomed Sleep Appliance

Snoring occurs when the soft tissue structures of the upper airway collapse and vibrate against each other, as air attempts to move through. This vibration produces the sound we know as snoring. This could affect your sleep and make you feel restless and tired through the day.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) occurs when the tongue and soft palate collapse onto the back of the throat causing the air flow to stop. When the oxygen level drops, the individual partially awakens. When the flow starts again, the individual falls back into sleep. This can occur multiple times during the night.

The combination of low oxygen levels and fragmented sleep cause excessive daytime drowsiness. Sleep apnoea patients are more likely to suffer from heart problems, high blood pressure and strokes. They also have higher incidences of work and driving related accidents.

At East Bentleigh Dental Group, Dr Merwyn Miller is a fully accredited member of the Australian Sleep Association. He is also an accredited SOMNOMED PROVIDER. His qualifications include B.D.S and H.D.DENT with a major in oral medicine and oral pathology; his oral medicine major is of great use in practicing Sleep Dentistry.

Dr Miller can arrange for you to have a home based sleep study for diagnosis purposes a Polysomnogram (PSG).

Oral Appliance Therapy

Oral MAS sleep appliances are similar to orthodontic retainers. Oral Appliance Therapy involves providing an appliance to maintain an opened, unobstructed airway, by repositioning the lower jaw, tongue and soft palate in a forward position.

Dentists with training in Oral Appliance Therapy are familiar with these appliances. Dr Miller will work with your respiratory physician as part of the medical team in your diagnosis, treatment, and on-going care. Dr Miller will continue to monitor your treatment and evaluate the response of your teeth and jaws.

Somnomed is an appropriate treatment for Sleep Apnoea that can stop snoring and fits in the palm of your hand. Its unique design permits the user to open and close their mouth normally making it very comfortable to wear.
